17th Century William and Mary Kingwood Strongbox, with Gilt Brass
A 17th century William and Mary Kingwood strongbox, with gilt brass straps. This strongbox has to be one of the most charming and certainly the smallest example we have encountered, at just 17.5 cm high, 28 cm wide and 18 cm deep. A strongbox of similar merit form and style resides at Burghley House in ‘The 1st George State Room.
The box appears decorative, but it was also very difficult to break open or steal. It has a strong lock to the centre and two bolts concealed in the sides, so that it could be screwed down into floorboards if necessary or that of a horse-drawn carriage. Strong-boxes veneered in oysters of Princewood such as this were luxury objects.
The Cabinet-makers who would have constructed and veneered the carcase apparently sold them, often using tropical hardwood veneers, and mounted it with sets of mounts, handles and locks bought in from brass founders. The elaborate veneering and conspicuous gilded brass mounts show that the appearance of these objects was important.
Thomas Pistor, of Ludgate Hill, London worked with the renowned cabinetmaker Gerrit Jensen. Gerrit Jensen supplied a walnut-veneered ‘strongbox’ to Colonel James Grahame in 1668, Levens Hall. It is recorded that Thomas Pistor’s remaining stock was sold off post his death in 1711, included ‘three fine Prices wood strongboxes’.

The characterful and charming 18/19th-century cloisonne enamel censer, is modelled as a crane with straight gilt-metal legs, realistically detailed feet and claws, standing on a detailed gilt base. The neck gracefully curved above the plump hollow body brightly enamelled in turquoise.

Superb George III mahogany wine cooler or cellarette on stand. The cellarette is in fabulous original condition with a lovely rich patina. Lovely well-patinated flame of mahogany to the top, with a line rope inlayed stringing of holly and box. Original led lined interior divided into four sections.
Large Pair of Blue and White Baluster Vases and Covers
Each jar is decorated with four reserves on a ground of scrolling flowers. The domed covers are surmounted by a finial. LATE QING DYNASTY (1644-1911).
Charles II Pewter Flat Lid Tankard
The Oak Interior – An extremely rare Charles II pewter tankard dated 1666. The tankard bears a crested stamp dated 1666 to the inside of the base. The flat caddy and ringed lid are stamped to the top with four hallmarks of the period and the initials C B. The beautifully crafted handle terminates at a bifurcated rams horn hinged thumb piece and the vessel sits on a multiple ringed and flared base.
George I Carved Irish Walnut Pair of Chairs
A rare and fine pair of Irish George I walnut side chairs of excellent colour and patina, circa 1720. The undercut shaped back-splats of violin form are beautifully and naturally carved in acanthus leaves, returning into eared scrolls, topped by a crest rail depicting curtain swags and fine hanging passementerie.
