17th Century Beadwork/Stumpwork Japanned Mirror

Advances in English domestic glass production in the second half of the century coincided with the fashion for stumpwork and resulted in the production of some of the most spectacular examples being produced.

The three-dimensionality of the raised beadwork surrounded by a japanned gilt frame and creative use of silk to the hair, mirror plate to the windows of the house and pagoda, to this example are very impressive.

This example was surely made by a royalist depicting a well drawn King Charles II and Catherine of Braganza standing above a heraldic lion and lepard, to which appear on the royal coat of arms.

The decoration of this mirror celebrates the marriage union, symbolised by the flanking of the mirror glass and manor house above them at the top of the mirror, this would suggest a date of 1662-85.
