17th Century William and Mary Olive Oyster Chest, Circa 1690 England

Rather attractive and unusual late 17th century olive oyster chest of drawers, circa 1685, England.

The chest comprises of five long, perfectly graduating drawers beneath a finely worked top, each hand-cut oyster carefully selected for its figure and arranged in a geometric pattern.

Pieces of this calibre were typically commissioned by the highest levels of society, and it is likely that this chest was made for a member of the aristocracy, if not royalty, during the reign of William and Mary.

The two short over three long oak lined graduating drawers, veneered throughout in finely figured olive oyster within holly borders. The drawer fronts and sides carefully laid with well matched oysters of good colour and patination.

The top finely veneered in geometric form, centred by a bold oyster roundel within a holly lined rosette and broad crossbanded border.
