18th Century George III Chippendale Mahogany and Tulipwood Writing Table, C1770

A fine and rare mahogany serpentine writing table in the manner of Thomas Chippendale with retractable firescreeen, writing slide inset with tooled leather and drawer to one side bearing the label for M.Harris and Sons.

The serpentine ovolo moulded top is cross banded in tulipwood and inlaid with fine stringing over a brushing slide and shaped ”dummy” drawer. To the left side of the frieze is a further ”dummy” drawer and to the right, a long drawer with divides to the front presumably for ink jars. Raised on elegant cabriole legs.

The gilt brass axe-head handles, knobs and lock and key appear to be original.

The table relates closely to Plate: 436, page 238 in ”The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale” by Christopher Gilbert, described as “Lady”s writing table with retractable firescreen, tulipwood and rosewood, 1766.

The table would suit as a bedroom table, drawing room table, pier table/console table small entrance hall table or as intended, a writing table.

Condition

Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Superb original condition and of very good colour.

Dimensions

Height: 71 cm (27.96 in)
Width: 56 cm (22.05 in)

Provenance

Previously handled by M.Harris and Sons of 44/52 New Oxford Street, London.

M. Harris & Sons traded from New Oxford Street, London as their main galleries; in about 1915 the business of Isaacs formally passed to Moss Harris (b. 29th April 1859, d.11th June 1941) and the firm M. Harris & Sons began. The business specialised in antique English Furniture, opening a branch in New York in the 1940s.

When Moss Harris died in 1941, his sons Sidney (d.1950) and George (d.1947) continued the business, and were joined by Sidney”s son, Robert in 1946. The firm had a Royal Warrant to H.M. The Queen (Queen Mary) from the 1920s and a Royal Warrant to the Prince of Wales during 1929-1936.
