18th Century Queen Anne Burr Walnut Single Dome Bureau Bookcase

An Extremely Rare George I Burr Walnut Single Dome Bureau Bookcase of Small Proportions. England, Circa 1720-1730

The moulded single dome is surmounted by the original solid walnut finials above a mirrored door with bevelled mirror plate and single candle slide below. The door opens to reveal a series of adjustable shelves.

The bureau fall encloses a well-fitted interior with an arrangement of drawers and pigeonholes. Below, are four graduated cockbeaded drawers retaining their original brass handles and escutcheons. A particularly unusual feature is the concealed brushing slide positioned beneath the upper drawer.

The piece retains an excellent colour and rich patina, together with fine oak-lined drawers and superb surfaces.

Furniture of this scale and quality is seldom encountered. Whilst retaining all the elegance associated with the finest early 18th century bureau bookcases, its compact proportions make it remarkably charming.

A highly original and extremely attractive example of early English walnut furniture.

Constructed primarily in burr walnut with a rich, warm patina developed over centuries. Oak-lined drawers indicate high-quality cabinetmaking.
