A Fine 18th Century George II Figured Walnut Chest on Chest or Tallboy, 1740

A Fine 18th Century George II Figured Walnut Chest on Chest or Tallboy, Circa 1740. England.

In two parts divided by a cross grain moulding the reeded upper section consists of a complex cross-grain cornice over three short and three long graduating cockbeaded, crossbanded and feather-banded oak lined drawers.

The lower section is raised on the original bracket feet and consists of three oak lined long graduating, cockbeaded, crossbanded and feather-banded oak lined drawers.

The sides are veneered in book-matched figured walnut.

This is an accomplished and original example from the period with fantastic colour and patination.

Condition

Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Fabulous depth of colour and patination. All hardware, locks and bracket feet appear to be original.

This strongbox has to be one of the most charming and certainly the smallest example we have encountered, at just 17.5 cm high, 28 cm wide and 18 cm deep. A strongbox of similar merit form and style resides at Burghley House in ‘The 1st George State Room.
