A Fine and Rare 17th Century William and Mary Olive Oyster Table, Circa 1680-1700. England

Inlaid with holly, the cross-grain olive moulded and banded top sits above a frieze incorporating a finely lined oak drawer retaining the original bifurcated scroll and floral backplate handles. Raised on all four original freely carved Solomonic or barley twist and ball legs, joined by a ‘y’ shaped stretcher and standing on all four original bun feet.

The table was commissioned during the short reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). This was a great time in British furniture design with some of the most notable pieces to date being commissioned. However, all the credit cannot simply go to the Indigenous as a large influx of skilled craftsman flooded in from the continent such as Daniel Marrot (1661-1752) a French Protestant architect, furniture designer and engraver who was at the forefront of late baroque style.

A superb original example with well-patinated surfaces throughout and of very good colour.

Condition

Good. Historic restorations to the original bun feet in line with age and use.
