A Fine and Rare 17th Century William and Mary Olive Oyster Table, Circa 1680-1700. England
This exceptional William and Mary olive oyster table exemplifies the height of late 17th-century craftsmanship, reflecting both the influence of English furniture design and the talents of skilled continental artisans of the period.
The table has a superb cross-grain olive moulded and banded top, richly inlaid with holly.
The frieze incorporates a finely lined oak drawer, retaining its original bifurcated scroll and floral backplate handles, a testament to the table’s authenticity and craftsmanship.
Raised on the original Solomonic (barley twist) and ball-carved legs, showcasing both artistic finesse and structural strength.
The legs are joined by a well-executed ‘Y’-shaped stretcher, adding stability while preserving visual lightness. The table stands proudly on its original bun feet, some displaying subtle, historic restorations appropriate to its age and use.
Commissioned during the William and Mary period (1689-1702), this table reflects a golden era of British furniture design. The influx of continental craftsmen—including French Protestant designer Daniel Marot (1661–1752)—ushered in a fusion of late Baroque style and English sensibilities. These master artisans brought their expertise and artistry to pieces like this, contributing to their enduring beauty and significance.
This rare and superb example represents an iconic fusion of elegance, craftsmanship, and history. With its outstanding form, colour, and condition, this William and Mary table would be a prized addition to any discerning collection or period interior.
