A Fine and Rare Late 18th Century George III Satinwood Octagonal Box, C.1790.

The kingwood crossbanded sectional top with ebony and box stringing is finely laid around a central inlaid patera. Opening on double hinges to the ebony lipped satinwood interior. The satinwood frieze is similarly crossbanded in Kingwood to the top and base.

The box is in superb original conditon and has a lovely rich colour.

Condition

Good. Wear consistent with age and use.

The Oak Interior – An extremely rare Charles II pewter tankard dated 1666. The tankard bears a crested stamp dated 1666 to the inside of the base. The flat caddy and ringed lid are stamped to the top with four hallmarks of the period and the initials C B. The beautifully crafted handle terminates at a bifurcated rams horn hinged thumb piece and the vessel sits on a multiple ringed and flared base.

This strongbox has to be one of the most charming and certainly the smallest example we have encountered, at just 17.5 cm high, 28 cm wide and 18 cm deep. A strongbox of similar merit form and style resides at Burghley House in ‘The 1st George State Room.
