A Fine Irish George II Carved Mahogany Side/Silver Table, circa 1740

A Fine Irish George II Carved Mahogany Side/Silver Table, circa 1740

The rectangular single-piece mahogany top with moulded edge, above a shaped frieze, centred by a carved scallop shell to both faces, raised on cabriole legs carved to the knees with scrolling foliage and terminating in trefoil feet.

The use of the scallop shell, shaped apron, boldly carved cabriole legs and trefoil feet are characteristic features of Irish cabinetmaking during the second quarter of the 18th century. The shell in particular occurs frequently on Irish tables of the period, appearing in numerous variations on both friezes and aprons.
Of particularly good compact proportions, retaining a good colour and surface.

Ireland, circa 1740.
