A Pair of 18th Century George II Mahogany High Back Chairs on Carved Cabriole Legs
A very attractive and rare pair of 18th century George II mahogany side chairs, circa 1730-1740. England
The high rectangular backs and seats are upholstered in light gold Damask close nailed to beech frames and raised on cabriole legs carved to the front and out swept to the back, terminating on pad feet.
Accounts of this form of high back or bannister chair were recorded in England from circa 1720-1740. For example, a set of six is recorded in the Second Best Bed Chamber in 1726 at Ham House. A powerful suite of mahogany and beechwood chairs was made for the Treasury of Whitehall by an unknown maker in 1739.
Condition
Good. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs are in lovely original condition and are a very good colour. Later wooden blocks to the underside. Recently upholstered in gold Damask.
