A Rare and Important Charles II 17th Century Table Clock by Henry Jones

A magnificent and exceptionally rare Charles II English eight-day spring-driven table clock by the renowned maker Henry Jones, dating to circa 1675-1680.

The elegantly proportioned ebony veneered basket-top case with gilt brass pierced sound frets and large glazed apertures beautifully displays the highly sophisticated movement within. The fine square brass dial retains its original winged cherub-head spandrels, silvered chapter ring and finely pierced blued steel hands.

The striking eight-day twin fusee movement with verge escapement features an exceptionally rare and early bar-operated pull-quarter repeating mechanism on three bells of differing pitch, together with hour striking on a separate bell. The backplate is profusely engraved in period style around the signature cartouche: Henry Jones in ye Temple.

Henry Jones was one of the leading English clockmakers of the late 17th century. Born near Southampton in 1634, he was apprenticed through the Clockmakers’ Company to the celebrated Edward East, clockmaker to both Charles I and Charles II and one of the most important horologists of the period. Jones remained working for East even after gaining his freedom in 1663 before establishing his own workshop in the Inner Temple, London, in 1672.

His work was highly regarded during his lifetime, and today examples by Jones are held in important collections including the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Clocks of this complexity, quality and originality are exceptionally rare to encounter today.

Condition

Good. Wear consistent with age and use. The repeat work was partly restored to the original pattern. Several missing parts were made in the correct style.
