A Stately (48 Inch) George III 18th Century Mahogany Serpentine Chest of Drawers

Attributed to the workshop or circle of Thomas Chippendale
England, circa 1760.

Of exceptional scale and elegant serpentine form, the beautifully figured mahogany top above a brushing slide and four long graduated drawers. The drawers are finely oak lined and retain the original gilt brass handles, locks and escutcheons. The drawer fronts are framed by finely carved beaded shaped stiles.

The chest stands on the original shaped bracket feet, concealing recessed articulating brass castors, a feature associated with Chippendale’s workshop. The drawers run smoothly on their original runners. The sides are veneered in richly coloured mahogany displaying excellent depth of tone and patination.

The chest retains the characteristic red wash to the underside, a feature seen on documented furniture associated with the workshop of Thomas Chippendale. The oak lined drawers display finely cut dovetail joints of exceptional quality, indicative of the high standard of craftsmanship associated with leading London cabinet makers of the mid 18th century.

The overall design, construction and quality relate closely to recorded serpentine chests attributed to the workshop and circle of Thomas Chippendale.

A bold and well proportioned example, notable for its monumental scale, measuring 48 inches in width, and for its exceptional colour and state of preservation.
