An early 18th century Queen Anne japanned chinoiserie cabinet on stand.

The cabinet English, first quarter of the 18th century, the stand Chinese, circa 1700–1725.

The cabinet decorated throughout in gilt japanning on a black ground with chinoiserie scenes of figures, birds and pavilions within line borders, the sides with floral compositions in keeping with the overall scheme. The doors open on the original engraved brass strap hinges to a fully fitted interior of multiple small drawers, each retaining matching japanned decoration and fitted with decorated brass ring pull handles.

The stand of associated date, almost certainly Chinese export, constructed in hardwood and finished in urushi lacquer.

Raised on slender legs with shaped brackets and a pierced frieze incorporating a repeating geometric motif. This form closely relates to examples in the Long Gallery at Osterley Park, where a small group of near identical stands survive.

Given the precise fit of the cabinet to the stand, it is entirely plausible that the cabinet was made in England to sit on an imported stand of this type. The finishes sit comfortably together, suggesting the combination has been considered from an early date.
