Fine 18th Century English Celestial Pocket Globe by Nathaniel Hill, London, 1754

A fine and rare 18th century English terrestrial and celestial pocket globe by Nathaniel Hill in its original black pebbled fish skin case dated 1754 titled “A new Terrestrial GLOBE by Nath Hill 1754”.

This beautiful example of an early pocket globe retains all of its original color and varnish to the engraved hand-colored paper gores. On the globe is marked a numbered and graduated equator with a graduated ecliptic line also drawn. The Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are also shown. Pocket globes were extremely popular from the early 18th century to the mid-19th century; it demonstrated both the intellectual veracity and great wealth of its holder.

The countries and territories shown demonstrate the rapidly evolving European knowledge of the world thanks to famous voyages of discovery. Countries such as Australia (shown as ‘New Holland’) and North America are only partially mapped. The Tradewinds, as well as monsoons, are also shown.

The globe is contained within its original fish skin case, which opens to reveal applied engraved hand-colored celestial charts of the Northern and Southern Skies on each half. The celestial charts are richly colored in greens, pinks, reds, yellows and orange. The case is hinged and is closed with two brass hook and eye catches. The outer rim of the case is painted red.

The maker, Nathaniel Hill, was known to have been active between 1746 and 1768 with a shop at the Globe and the Sun in Chancery Lane. He was a surveyor, mathematician and instrument maker who was apprenticed to Richard Cushee before producing his own globes of fantastic quality. A trade card from the time advertises globes of 3, 9, 12 and 15 inches.

Condition

Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Globe and celestial hemispheres good with wear commensurate with age. Case good with the usual wear.

Chinese Cloisonne Enamel Censer Modelled as a Crane 18/19th Century Qing Dynasty

The characterful and charming 18/19th-century cloisonne enamel censer, is modelled as a crane with straight gilt-metal legs, realistically detailed feet and claws, standing on a detailed gilt base. The neck gracefully curved above the plump hollow body brightly enamelled in turquoise.

Large Pair of Blue and White Baluster Vases and Covers

Each jar is decorated with four reserves on a ground of scrolling flowers. The domed covers are surmounted by a finial. LATE QING DYNASTY (1644-1911).

Charles II Pewter Flat Lid Tankard

The Oak Interior – An extremely rare Charles II pewter tankard dated 1666. The tankard bears a crested stamp dated 1666 to the inside of the base. The flat caddy and ringed lid are stamped to the top with four hallmarks of the period and the initials C B. The beautifully crafted handle terminates at a bifurcated rams horn hinged thumb piece and the vessel sits on a multiple ringed and flared base.

17th-Century Olive Oyster Lace Box

Charming and original 12” olive oyster lace box, circa 1680-90. It is most likely that this gorgeous piece was commissioned during the short reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). This was a great time in British furniture design with some of the most notable pieces to date being commissioned.
