18th Century George I Walnut Shepherds Crook Arm Chair with Period Needlework
A wonderfully drawn early 18th century George I walnut shepherd’s crook armchair covered in period needlework, circa 1730. England.
A simply exquisite example of an early 18th-century shepherd’s crook armchair dating from the reign of George I.
It should be noted that the chair has the most wonderful proportions, colour and age-patinated surfaces throughout.
The well formed walnut shepherds crook arms led down to the period needlework upholstered bell-shaped seat and out swept cabriole legs carved to the knee with a shell and pendent, terminating on pad feet.
Similarly, the curved back is upholstered in period needlework depicting a couple, presumably courting in period dress.
Condition
Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Lovely original sleepy condition and of very good colour, patination and surface. The needlework is in sleepy country house condition with fading, losses and wear in line with age and use.
