Unique 18th Century George II ‘Dummy’ Fronted Mahogany Bachelors Chest

The unique 18th century George II mahogany architects bachelors chest, C. 1730-1740. England

The figured mahogany fold over ovolo-moulded top conceals the original tooled leather and rests on extending bearers to the ‘dummy’ fronted facade. The facade consists of a long drawer, a brushing slide, two short and two long graduating drawers above a moulded base, shaped apron and the original bracket feet.

Great lengths have been installed to ensure the facade passes as a fully functioning chest. Each ‘drawer’ is vennered in figured mahogany, cock-beaded and fitted with the original open fret gilt brass handles and escutcheons, divided by cross-grain drawers rails with ovolo or ‘caddy’ moulded stiles.

Each end is fitted with a single oak lined cock-beaded drawer above a raised and fielded cock-beaded cupboard, each concealing two shaped adjustable oak folio slides.

The chest is of the most wonderful colour with well-patinated and original surfaces throughout.
