Miniature Hasamibako Travelling Chest, Edo Period Late 18th Early 19th century

A late 18th or early 19th-century Edo period hasamibako (travelling chest) of diminutive small proportions.

The rectangular box and flush fitting cover, decorated in gold hiramaki-e on a black ground, the sides with hanabishi, cherry blossom and willow, the cover with further sprays of willow and blossoms, the interior opening to reveal a rectangular inner tray in black lacquer with fundame rim, the interior of the box lined with paper decorated with sparse gold foil. engraved silver fittings with scrollwork.

Condition

Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Superb original condition.

The Oak Interior – An extremely rare Charles II pewter tankard dated 1666. The tankard bears a crested stamp dated 1666 to the inside of the base. The flat caddy and ringed lid are stamped to the top with four hallmarks of the period and the initials C B. The beautifully crafted handle terminates at a bifurcated rams horn hinged thumb piece and the vessel sits on a multiple ringed and flared base.
