Rare 17th Century William and Mary Bur Elm Chest of drawers, circa 1685
A Rare William & Mary Burr Elm Chest of Drawers, England, circa 1690
Veneered throughout in richly figured burr elm. The chest has real presence, with a confident, architectural stance typical of the late 17th century.
Standing on turned bun feet beneath a long-grain ogee base moulding, with two short and three long graduated drawers. The drawer fronts are faced in tightly clustered burr elm with mitred banding, framed by thick stile rails. The top is veneered in quartered burr elm and finished with an unusual inverted long-grain ogee moulding.
The surfaces retain an attractive, patina and colour.
Condition
Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Fitted with later solid brass hardware matching that of the period. Retaining the original locks.
