A Rare 18th Century George II Carved Cut Gesso and Giltwood Mirror, Circa 1730
The acanthus egg and dart-carved swan neck pediment is surmounted with a carved armorial cartouche flanked by opposing C scrolls on an egg and dart plinth, leading down to the acanthus-carved and punch-decorated frieze centred by a shell.
The original soft bevelled looking glass is set within a gadrooned frame bordered with a further concave carved leaf and floral design moulding, defined by cascading swags and passementerie.
Similarly, the punch-decorated apron is centred with a well-drawn mask crowned with Prince of Wales feathers, scrolling acanthus and floral patera to each side.
This is a fine and rare example in an excellent state of preservation retaining the original soft bevelled looking glass.
Condition
Good. Wear consistent with age and use. A rare survivor retaining the original Vauxal bevelled mirror plate. Original gilding refreshed.
